Wolds Veteran Runners Club
Steve Green of Wolds Vets

WOLDS Veteran Runners Club was formed in Grimsby, North East Lincs, in 1988 to encourage veteran runners in the area.

Minimum age for first and second claim members is 35 for women and 35 for men.

Membership age was lowered for men in November 2006, after an International ruling on Masters athletics.

Membership stands at about 150 people with some members being first claim, some second and a few social members (any age).

Membership starts in November and the current subs are £7 for full members, £5 for second claim members, and £2.50 for social members.

A Membership form is on the club’s web site (link below).

The club is based at the Novartis Social Club in Great Coates Grimsby – opposite the Novartis factory main entrance. It has an excellent, well-equipped bar with good food always available.

Runners can take advantage of the changing rooms and showers facilities as well as the parking area behind the clubhouse

Club night is Mondays at 6.30pm sharp when a variety of routes on road and cross-country are tackled. Distances usually range from three to six miles. All ability levels are welcomed as male and female runners quickly form into appropriate small groups that stay together.

Infrequent members and new runners are welcomed and will not run unaccompanied. Most people then retire to the bar for comparison of notes!

Some members also meet up on Wednesday evening and Saturday mornings for mainly off-road longer runs. The Wednesday run is usually from a country pub somewhere in rural Lincolnshire.

Wolds Vets have designated Club Championship races where club vests have to be worn; these events are open to all members on an age-group basis.

The club currently organises two permitted races, the Grimsby Sea Wall 5 Mile in April and the infamous Lincolnshire Wolds 10 Mile in September.

Other club races are the December, summer and Easter Dashes from Weelsby Woods in Grimsby ran over a three-mile course, preceded by a one-mile fun run.

There is also the shorter race series around the Pyewipe Industrial Estate between May and July.

Those who have been active members for some time describe the Wolds Veteran Runners Club as a friendly club with social participation encouraged as much as competitive running.

Just e-mail the membership secretary, Steve Green at stgreen@ntlworld.com or ring him on (01472) 310861 to tell him that you want to join, or perhaps attend initially as a guest.
