My opinion is that it is Roger Federer. He always seems to be in such perfect sync with his sport and it always impresses me when he blows people like Andy Rod**** and Lleyton Hewitt off the court by three sets to love at Wimbledon. If he wins the French Open in the coming days it will only strengthen my opinion. My mate, though, thinks it is Tiger Woods. He says he has revolutionised golf and points out that his many tournament wins have come by beating 150-plus opponents, whereas Federer only beats seven to win his titles. I can see his point and I'm beginning to give into his argument. What does everyone else think? Federer or Woods, or someone else altogether? Here are a few names to get you thinking... Steven Gerrard - has probably the best all round game of any footballer in the world. Floyd Mayweather - has fought all the top fighters and, barring Oscar De La Hoya last month, nobody has ever got near him. Valentino Rossi - seven-time MotoGP champion, enough said. Dan Carter - rugby players always get my respect for their strength and athleticism, but Carter has skill in abundance too. He is sure to be the All Blacks' key cog in this autumn's World Cup. Peyton Manning - possibly the best NFL quarter-back since Joe Montana. Is as intelligent as he is talented. Michael Phelps - won six swimming gold medals at the 2004 Olympics and is a good bet to break Mark Spitz's long-standing record of seven golds in one Olympics in Beijing next year. |

Though I think by the end of next year's Olympic games, Michael Phelps will be roundly renowned as the world's greatest living sports person. I think he just needs a really good Olympic games which will put him on that platform. |

Valentino Rossi as well is a great shout...that man is consistency personified. What about Ricky Hatton and Joe Calzaghe though...they've got to be up there from these shores at least. Going back a few years I would have said Michael Johnson - he was a machine!! |

At the recent world champs he won seven gold medals breaking five world records along the way only being denied an eighth gold & sixth world record by one of his team mates getting the medley relay team disqualified in the heats (All of this in just 7 seven days covering 17 races in this time a hell of a work load). The two most impressive world records were his 200 freestyle being the first man to go under the 1 min 44sec(1.43.76) mark beating Ian Thorpes seemingly impossible 1.44.06 and his 200 fly dropping his own world record by nearly 2 seconds to 1.52.09 nobody else in the world can go under 1.55 for this event!!!! This was all in pre olympic year when athlete's are still in heavy training & not fully rested. He is the most versatile athlete on the planet being able to achieve world class times in any event. Without a doubt the best athlete in the world!!! |

He broke the world record for highest test innings score twice - and also the highest first class score. In a better team, he would have been regarded even more highly than he was. |
