NORTH Shore, straddling the North Sea, is a unique mixture of links and parkland on the Lincolnshire coast.
James Braid is still regarded as the foremost course designer and North Shore, in 1910, was one of his creations.
And it has certainly stood the test of time.
It was built with the aim of breaking the monotony of purely links courses and, with the space available to Braid, a plan to have two loops of nine was put into operation.
The loops were intended to inter-wind between each other to give the best of both a links and a parkland course throughout the round.
The fact that the course was built over a three-tier staging meant that hills and troughs enhanced the difficulty by providing blind holes.
Coastal erosion has narrowed the 431-yard fifth, where sea defences to the right demand that you find the middle of the fairway as the beach and out-of-bounds lurk nearby.
A 15-foot mound at 250 yards out can lead to a blind second shot.
At par 71, the course includes 13 par four holes, two par fives and three par threes, with each loop of nine starting and finishing at the hotel.
At one time North Shore had an entry in the Guinness Book of Records as holding the largest membership of any golf club.
It now stands at around 400 with country membership always a big factor with members in Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Notts and Leicestershire.
There is a strong link with golf societies with many returning each year.
Near-perfect drainage means that only in the most severe weather conditions is there any possibility of the course being closed.
The club’s aim is to avoid winter greens at all costs.
North Shore has been under its current ownership for 23 years and all future developments will be sympathetic to the original Braid design.
This was to create a challenging course using the natural landscape and prevailing winds.
