OPEN SINGLES COMPETITION 

To  be  played  Sunday  22^nd  June at Sussex Recreation Ground (All  Grimsby / Cleethorpes  except  where  stated  otherwise)

The Open Singles competition has this year attracted an increased entry with the draw has producing some competitive games in the first round. Last year’s champion Peter Cox now playing for Goxhill BC will play Terry O’Brien (Ordsall BC) in a repeat of his opening game in 2007. Having missed last year’s tournament due to illness the 2006 winner David Hall (Ordsall BC) is back this year and plays Val Prior (Purbrook Heath BC) making a long journey from Portsmouth. The 2007 Grimsby Open Singles holder David Cullum (Kingsway Printers BC) will play a newcomer to Cleethorpes in Richard Lochman (Melbourne BC) making the journey from York. Another local player looking to add a Cleethorpes Open Singles title to the Grimsby Open Singles titles won in 2003 and 2005 is Jonathan Darley (Clee BC) who will face Peter Pulfrey (Grant Thorold BC) in his opening game. Other local players who will be looking to repeat their previous success at the tournament are Robert Dalby (Carr Lane BC) who failed to reach last years final by a single shot and faces Norman Dodsworth (Sussex BC), Peter Cullum (Kingsway Printers BC) the 2004 Grimsby Singles winner plays last years Open Pairs winner Bill Bateman (Alford BC).

Last year’s 3^rd placed pair and runners up in the Player of the Tournament Gordon Peck & Caroline Cullum (Kingsway Printers BC) will face Ann Johnson & Margaret Roberts (Habrough BC) with the winners coming up against the 2006 title holders George Cartwright & Chris Sutton (Barretts BC) in round two. The two beaten semi-finalists in 2007 John & Pat Belton (Waltham BC) have a tough opening game against former singles champion Jonathan Darley & partner Marion Burgess (Clee BC) and Chris & Rose Sutton (Kingsway Printers BC) will play the strong pairing of David Cole & Thelma Scrimshaw (Scartho Park BC ).
